We always want to make sure we look and feel healthy. That’s why when some of our patients begin to see melisma on their face, they begin to worry. We’re here to tell you everything you need to know about your melasma, what’s causing it, and how you can treat it, so you can continue living your life without worrying about your skin.

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a common skin condition that causes dark or discolored patches to appear around the eyes, cheeks, and forehead. Also known as pregnancy mask, most patients who get melasma are women who develop it during their pregnancy. These discolorations can look slightly darker than your natural skin tone, brown or gray, and can also appear on the arms or forearms.

What Causes Melasma?

While most patients who experience melasma are pregnant women, there isn’t a clear cause as to why this happens. It is important to note that birth control pills, pregnancy and other hormonal changes may cause melasma, and stress or thyroid disease may also aggravate it. Patients who have a deeper skin tone are at a higher risk of developing melasma, and patients who spend excessive time in the sun may cause their melasma to worsen over time.

How Can I Treat my Melasma?

While there is no singular cause for melasma, and no way to know if it will affect you, there are plenty of ways that you can treat it and restore your natural complexion. At Divine Laser & Anti-Aging Spa, we recommend the following treatment for your melasma.

  • PicoWay® Resolve Fusion. This cutting-edge laser treatment uses advanced laser technology to treat hyperpigmentation at its source. Using short bursts of intense laser technology, the PicoWay® Resolve Fusion fractional laser breaks up unwanted hyperpigmentation, providing our patients with flawless results in no time.
